Enhanced safety measures for K-12 schools

Enhanced safety measures and $121.2 million in federal funding are on the way, as the Province continues to strengthen health and safety plans in K-12 schools to keep students, teachers and staff safe during the pandemic.

All middle and secondary students and K-12 staff will now be required to wear non-medical masks in all indoor areas, including when they are with their learning groups. The only exceptions are when:

Backpack project aims to help students fight inequality and racism

When Abbotsford, B.C., teacher Nerlap Sidhu met her Grade 6 social studies students at the beginning of term last September, she knew right away she wanted to do a class project with them about anti-racism and inclusion.

Last spring, Black Lives Matter protests had ramped up in the U.S. following the killing of George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis.

Conversations about police violence and racism were also heating up in Canada.

Walking Together, Building Connections

The Abbotsford School District was the recipient, this week, of two art pieces entitled, “Walking Together, Building Connections.” Designed by local artist Linda Klippenstein, this cut-paper project celebrated community diversity and was created by a combined group, 75 women in all, of locally resident Abbotsford women and newcomer women. They gathered over a series of ten informal, inclusion-focused, art-making sessions at The Reach Gallery Museum, Archway Community Services, and W.J.Mouat Secondary.

School District Signs Education Enhancement Agreement for Indigenous Students

After months of significant and dedicated consultation and dialogue, the 2019-2024 Education Enhancement Agreement for Indigenous Students was signed on June 12th, 2019, by Chief Dalton Silver of Sumas First Nation, Chief Alice McKay of Matsqui First Nation, Lisa Hendry, President of the Fraser Valley Metis Association, Dr. Gwendolyn Point, advisor from Sto:lo Nation, Stan Petersen, Chair for the Abbotsford Board of Education, Superintendent Kevin Godden of the Abbotsford School District and Darlene MacDonald, District Principal for Aboriginal Education.
