From Caps and Gowns to New Beginnings

June 26, 2024

As I reflect on the many high school graduations I have attended over the years, the occasion never loses its magic. Each time I see our students donning their caps and gowns, I am filled with a profound sense of pride and accomplishment. The nature of our work in public education often means the fruits of our labour are not immediately visible the way they are, for example, when a developer hands over the keys to a new home. Our equivalent moment comes at graduation. It is a symbolic turning of the keys, marking the beginning of a new chapter for our graduates. Our hope is that we have equipped them well for the journey ahead, and this transition is a perfect opportunity for celebration. Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2024, and heartfelt thanks to the families and friends who have supported you along the way.

I also want to express my gratitude to our nearly 2,500 dedicated employees who make our system thrive. From crossing guards and custodians, bus drivers and clerical staff to education assistants, principals, vice principals, and those supporting our various departments—IT, Facilities, Finance, Human Resources, Communications, International, Senior Leaders, and more—I want to thank them all. And, of course, a special thanks to our teachers. It takes a collective effort to provide our students with a world-class educational experience.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates, much of our focus shifts towards preparing for the year ahead. In September, we will once again welcome hundreds of children to kindergarten, many of whom will experience the Abbotsford School District for the first time. These students will eventually make up the Graduating Class of 2037. It is awe-inspiring to contemplate. Our mission in the Abbotsford School District is to inspire and prepare students for a lifetime of success. Therefore, it is crucial that we keep an eye on the future, considering how emerging trends may shape how we live, work, learn, and play. While I cannot predict the future, I know that our 20,000 students will rely on us every day. It is a privilege to support this wonderful community. Wherever you may be on your journey with us, I wish you all the best and a wonderful July and August.
